The four fields of research of the IMI JU
The IMI JU was created as a part of the "European Technology Platform" of FP6. This platform consists of various stakeholders, led on by the pharmaceutical industry. The IMI JU has four fields of research:
- Safety
- Efficacy
- Knowledge-Management
- Education and Training

The innovation of medicines is the core task of all IMI JU research projects. It is the aim of the IMI JU to develop new tools for more efficient research and development.
Partnership with pharmaceuticial companies
The IMI JU is a new form of partnership: public research institutions group with pharmaceutical companies. Thus, new constellations and networks develop.Financing of IMI JU – projects

The financing of IMI JU projects consists of two parts:

1 billion Euro from FP7
-
1 billion Euro from the EFPIA (European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations)
These 2 billion Euro are allocated for a time span of 9 years, from 2008 – 2017.
